Gas Safety Check in Lincoln

A gas safety check verifies that the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) system in a caravan, motorhome or campervan is safe — from the cylinders and regulator through the pipework to the cooker, fridge, water heater and space heater. Because gas appliances burn inside an enclosed living space, a fault can lead to gas leaks, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning, so this is among the most safety-critical checks a touring vehicle receives.

The legal and competence requirement

Gas work on a caravan or motorhome must be carried out by a suitably qualified and registered engineer. In the UK, an engineer working on LPG systems in leisure accommodation vehicles should hold the relevant Gas Safe registration with the appropriate LPG and leisure-vehicle/caravan categories. Using an unqualified person for gas work is dangerous and may be unlawful, and can invalidate insurance and warranties. Always check an engineer's Gas Safe registration and that it covers the correct category before any gas work.

What's included

A gas safety check typically covers:

• Inspection of cylinders, regulator, hoses and the changeover system.
• A tightness (soundness) test of the whole system to detect leaks.
• Inspection of pipework, joints and supports.
• Checks that each appliance ignites, burns correctly and is properly flued and ventilated.
• Verification of ventilation provision (essential for safe combustion) and operation of carbon monoxide alarms.

Typical cost

A standalone gas safety check typically costs around £60–£120, though gas checks are also included within a full habitation check.

Frequency

Annually, as part of the habitation check, or whenever gas work has been done, a new appliance fitted, or if you suspect a fault (smell of gas, sooty marks, appliances burning yellow rather than blue).

Why it matters

Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless and can be fatal. Gas leaks risk fire and explosion. An annual gas safety check by a properly registered engineer is the most important safeguard for anyone sleeping in a gas-equipped vehicle.

DIY vs professional

Gas work is never a DIY job. You can and should fit and maintain a carbon monoxide alarm, keep ventilation clear and watch for warning signs — but any work on the gas system itself must be done by a registered engineer.

What to expect

If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the cylinder, ventilate, avoid ignition sources, and don't use the system until it's checked. For a routine check, the engineer will test the system and appliances and issue a report. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer in your area and confirm their registration before booking.
